Notes

Several isolated populations need to be examined taxonomically. Initial genetic diversity evaluations suggest that many of the existing populations may be genetically unique. Mulder et al. (2004) and O’Brien et al. (2009) for example have identified at least four genetically different populations of Labeobarbus polylepis. Although the genetic diversity of the populations of the species are largely unknown, many face threats. Other isolated subpopulations such as in the Elands River (Crocodile West River Catchment) is restricted to ±60 km of river.  Historical relocation of Lebeobarbus species throughout the range of L. polylepis has contributed to the confusion associated with the biodiversity and protection importance of the subpopulations. Many isolated subpopulations if established as unique conservation management units would qualify for a threatened category. This information should urgently be obtained.

Freshwater (=Inland waters)

This species is restricted to Highveld regions (above 600 m altitude). Typically occurs in larger streams and rivers, with good flows and rocky substrates, although it does occur in slower waters and in some dams. Food includes algae, aquatic invertebrates and small fish.
