Freshwater (=Inland waters)
Occurs in a wide variety of habitats, from pools and rapids of clear streams to deep turbid waters of rivers and impoundments. Juveniles shoal in large schools in shallow marginal habitats. Moves upstream in summer and retreats downstream in winter. Feeds on algae, detritus, crabs and aquatic insect nymphs. Breeds in summer over gravel beds after migrating upstream.SANBI is currently in the process of adding more information about species to this database.
