Notes

Enteromius rappax was synonymised with E. mattozi a species described from the Cunene River, Angola. The two populations are distinct in their morphology and colour patterns and this synonymy is not accepted here. Isolated records of papermouth are known from the Nata River, the upper Zambezi and parts of east-central Zimbabwe - the status of these populations needs to be determined. It must be noted that Enteromius rappax formerly belonged to the genus Barbus, but following the work of Yang et al. (2015), the genus Enteromius was expanded to include additional species resulting in the renaming of the Enteromius rappax (Skelton 2016).

Freshwater (=Inland waters)

The habitat and ecology of E. rapax is poorly known in South Africa. Extensive studies have been conducted for a Zimbabwean population. Conflicting habitat requirements have been expressed. For the Highveld subpopulation deep pools or dams with rocky or sandy substrate are prefered by this species. While the Kruger National Park subpopulation in the Shingwedzi River is reported to prefer permanent pools in seasonal rivers. The species reportedly migrates to spawn after the first significant rains of the season but appears to only spawn once a season.
