Notes

It must be noted that Enteromius annectens formerly belonged to the genus Barbus, but following the work of Yang et al. (2015) it has been changed to Enteromius (Skelton 2016). Possibly a species complex. Numerous populations of spotted barbs occur down the east African coast. The specific status of many of these populations needs further examination. Inland specimens similar to E. annectens enter the middle Zambezi (Zambia and Zimbabwe) and into the lower Shire (Malawi). According to D. Tweddle these are not E. annectens but an undescribed spotted barb species. The taxonomy of these populations needs to be determined also.
