Freshwater (=Inland waters)
In the Sabie Sand River System the habitat preference for S. meridianus is large sandy pools with well vegetated banks (phragmites) as well as overhanging vegetation (Kleynhans 1984, Skelton 1987). These pools range from 5 m to 15 m wide, more than 1 m deep with a sandy substratum (Kleynhans 1984). This predatory species preys on small fish, insects and other invertebrates (Skelton 2001). Pott and Le Roux (1968) described the breeding behaviour of this mouth brooding species with a fecundity of about 150 eggs.SANBI is currently in the process of adding more information about species to this database.
