Inhabits grassland, savannas, and forest margin habitats from coastal regions to higher altitudes in the Drakensberg Mountains, central Highveld and highlands of eastern Zimbabwe. Shelters in holes in the ground, under rocks and in old termitaria (Jacobsen 1989).
