Very common, found in savanna, grassland, forest margins, fynbos and desert from the coast up to about 2,300 m; shelters under rocks on soil, in rock crevices, old termitaria and holes in the ground (De Waal 1978, Jacobsen 1989, Broadley 1990, Branch 1998).
