Found in Savanna and Grassland Biomes, almost exclusively in bushveld areas. In South Africa and Eswatini (Swaziland), occurs at altitudes of 300-1,400 m (Jacobsen 1989). Lives communally in rocky outcrops, especially on the upper slopes of large granite hills, but may forage far from crevices (Jacobsen 1989, Branch 1998). It may enlarge its retreat if situated on soil under rocks (Jacobsen 1989).
