The species occurs in a range of habitats including rocky, broken terrain in savannas (typical of the subspecies A. m. nigra; Jacobsen 1986), and deep aeolian sands and coastal alluvium in savanna and forest edge habitats (typical of the subspecies A. m. micropthalma; Jacobsen 1989).
