Freshwater (=Inland waters)

It is a benthopelagic (living and feeding near the bottom as well as in midwaters or near the surface) species. The preferred habitat is vegetation fringing main river channels (Tweddle et al. 2004), but also marshes and marginal vegetation of lakes. In Swaziland, it is found in rock pools in the Komati River (Bills et al. 2004), in Lake Malawi it has been observed on the rocky shore (D. Tweddle unpublished), in the Lake Rukwa system it occurs in affluent rivers and small bodies of water (Seegers 1996) and in Lake Chiuta it is reported to be fairly common on the lake and in quiet stretches of affluent streams. It is active in subdued light and at night (Skelton 1993). It feeds on invertebrates (Konings 1990). This barb is subject to seasonal migratory movements (Bell-Cross 1976). The maximum size is 12.0 cm SL (Skelton 1993).
