Freshwater (=Inland waters)

This species inhabits a wide range of habitats that includes swamps, lagoons, flowing streams and the fringes of the main rivers, including the section of the Upper Zambezi just above Victoria Falls. Usually found in small shoals near the surface, this species feeds on small invertebrates such as mosquito larvae and daphnia. A serial spawner, Johnston's Topminnow lays eggs that attach to vegetation (Skelton 2001) and hatch after 15-20 days, with individuals reaching maturity within 6 months. During the flood season, juveniles are abundant in floodplain habitats such as road culverts (Tweddle et al. 2004).
