Notes

This species previously appeared on the IUCN Red List in the genus Aplocheilichthys Bleeker, 1863 but is now valid in the genus Micropanchax Myers, 1924. This species is described from Katanga province, Democratic Republic of Congo in the Congo System. It is unlikely that it is the same species throughout the currently recognised range. Taxonomic work is currently underway. The species has a fragmented population and occurs across numerous river systems. Full resolution of taxonomic issues is needed before a meaningful conservation analysis can be made.

Freshwater (=Inland waters)

Micropanchax katangae is found in marginal, vegetated habitats of a wide range of water bodies from small, low gradient upper catchment streams through to large river floodplains. In southern Africa it is abundant in the Zambezian River System. It feeds on a wide variety of small aquatic and to a lesser extent terrestrial invertebrates close to the water surface. It is a seasonal (summer) serial spawner, laying its eggs on and amongst vegetation (Skelton 2001).
