Notes

Most recently, Yang et al. (2015) proposed that the genus Pseudobarbus should be expanded to include all tetraploid cyprinines from southern Africa. This suggestion was accepted pending a critical evaluation of the generic status of these additional tetraploid species (Skelton 2016). Barbus trevelyani is one of the species that had been transferred to the genus “Pseudobarbus” (Skelton 2016). Skelton et al. (2018) subsequently erected a new genus, Amatolacypris, and transferred “Pseudobarbustrevelyani to this genus. Amatolacypris trevelyani was described from the Buffalo River System, with its distribution extending into the neighbouring Keiskamma River System. However, Ellender (2013) uncovered species level genetic divergences between the Buffalo population (Amatolacypris trevelyani sensu stricto) and the Keiskamma population (hereafter Amatolacypristrevelyani sp. Keiskamma’). These two lineages will thus be assessed separately. This assessment is on Amatolacypris trevelyani sensu stricto.

Freshwater (=Inland waters)

Occurs in pools and riffles in clear water streams with rocky habitats and woody riparian vegetation. Abundances are generally lower in river sections with low riparian cover.
