Found on rocky outcrops on the west-facing slopes of Mariepskop, often in partial shade from pine plantations, but also on outcrops of Black Reef quartzites atop the escarpment in the shade of indigenous montane forest; often in crevices under flakes of exfoliating rock and the dark overhangs of large boulders; occurs in Ohrigstad Mountain Bushveld (and Northern Escarpment Quartzitic Sourveld (see Mucina and Rutherford 2006) at 1,700–1,900 m a.s.l. (Jacobsen et al. 2014).
