Red List of South African Species

Alternatively, Explore species
Least Concern (LC)

Rationale (Changed due to Same category and criteria)

Although habitat is continuing to decline in the Vaal catchment, mainly because of pollution and sewage spills from Gauteng cities in South Africa, this species is widespread across the Orange River System and it occurs in many catchments where there are relatively few threats.

Distribution

Endemic to the Orange-Senqu and Vaal River systems in the Orange-Senque River basin (Skelton 1993). Has been introduced through the inter-basin water transfer scheme to the Great Fish River in the Eastern Cape where it has become established.

Threats

Pollution from major industrial centres such as Gauteng Province in South Africa is probably the biggest threat. Especially sewage overflow which has been documented to cause major fish kills in the Vaal River in recent years and has led to subsequent eutrophication of the system. Hybridisation between Orange River Mudfish (Labeo capensis) and Moggel (Labeo umbratus) is an additional threat. Possible hybrids have been found at a few impoundments in the Free State Province, South Africa.

Uses and trade

Important angling species in the Free State Province, South Africa.

Conservation

Pollution from industrial centres and especially sewage overflow needs to be addressed through the South African River Health Programme. The species remains abundant, however there are no protection measures in place to restrict threats.
