Red List of South African Species

Alternatively, Explore species
Least Concern (LC)

Rationale

The Rugose Agile Grasshopper (Plegmapterus sinuosus) occurs in the west of South Africa with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of ca 71,000 km². It is assumed to be quite common and therefore probably not threatened by extinction. It is therefore assessed as Least Concern.

Distribution

The species occurs in the west of South Africa, from Riviersonderend in the south to the Namibian border. It may also occur in Namibia. Its estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) is ca 71,000 km².

Population trend

Trend

There is no information available on the population size and trend of this species. The number of museum records is relatively high, suggesting that the species is quite common, but Adu-Acheampong et al. (2016) documented only a single specimen from 46 study sites in the Cape region.

Threats

The main threat to the species is transformation of its habitat into farmland.

Uses and trade

The species is not utilized.

Conservation

The species occurs in protected areas, but no specific conservation action is in place for it. Research into its ecology, threats and population trend is required.
