Red List of South African Species

Alternatively, Explore species
Least Concern (LC)

Rationale

The Common Agile Grasshopper is very widespread in southern Africa with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 2.6 million km². Because of its wide distribution and large population size it is unlikely to meet the thresholds of any of the threatened Red List categories. It is therefore assessed as Least Concern.

Distribution

This species has a very wide distribution from the South African Cape region in the south to southern Zambia in the north and from the Namibian Kunene Region in the west to central Zimbabwe in the east. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is ca 2.6 million km².

Population trend

Trend

No data on the population size of this species exist. The species is widespread, but subpopulation sizes are usually small (D. Matenaar, pers. comm. 2018).

Threats

No major threats to this species have been documented. It doesn't appear to be sensitive to overgrazing (Johnsen 1990).

Uses and trade

The species is not utilised.

Conservation

No specific conservation action is necessary for this species. It occurs in several protected areas. More research is required to obtain a better knowledge of its distribution, habitat requirements, threats and population trend.
