Red List of South African Species

Alternatively, Explore species
Least Concern (LC)

Rationale

The Southern Agile Grasshopper is very widespread in South Africa and Lesotho with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of ca 700,000 km². The species has been recorded from natural fynbos habitat as well as anthropogenic habitats (vineyards). It is thus probably not very sensitive to environmental changes and is subsequently assessed as Least Concern.

Distribution

This species has a wide distribution in South Africa and Lesotho from the Namibian border in the northwest to the Cape Peninsula in the south and KwaZulu-Natal in the east. A record from the North West Province is here considered uncertain. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is ca 700,000 km².

Population trend

Trend

The species is common and very widespread, but the population trend has not been documented. Abundances are relatively high (Matenaar et al. 2015).

Threats

Threats to this species have been reported. It might be affected by conversion of its habitat into farmland.

Uses and trade

The species is not utilised.

Conservation

No specific conservation action for this species is in place or required. It occurs in several protected areas (Matenaar et al. 2015). Research into its threats and the population trend is needed.
