Red List of South African Species

Alternatively, Explore species
Least Concern (LC)

Rationale

The Wolkberg Agile Grasshopper (Aneuryphymus rhodesianus) is found in the northern parts of the Drakensberg range in South Africa (Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng Provinces) as well as in the eastern part of Zimbabwe. It may also be found in southeastern Mozambique. Due to its large extent of occurrence (EOO) the species is unlikely to meet the thresholds of a Red List criterion and is therefore assessed as Least Concern.

Distribution

This species occurs in the North of South Africa and the East of Zimbabwe. It may also be present in southwestern Mozambique. A record from Knysna is doubtful and here disregarded. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is ca 200,000 kmĀ².

Population trend

Trend

No data on the population size or trend exist.

Threats

The range of this species is strongly influenced by deforestation (ca 19% from 2000 to 2016) and plantations of exotic trees (ca 11% based upon the 2000 forest cover; Hansen et al. 2013). It is likely that the species is more sensitive to the latter than to deforestation. Furthermore, it might be impacted by conversion of its habitat into farmland.

Uses and trade

The species is not utilized.

Conservation

No specific conservation action is in place for this species, but it occurs in protected areas. Research into its ecology, distribution, threats and population trend is required.
