Least Concern (LC)

Rationale

Bullacris discolor is a fairly widespread species found along the coastal regions of much of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape Provinces of South Africa, where it is frequently encountered in the field. It is assessed as Least Concern (LC) based on its wide geographic distribution and its abundance.

Distribution

Bullacris discolor is endemic to South Africa, where it is distributed throughout much of the coastal regions of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape Provinces. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is ca 250,000 kmĀ².

Population trend

Trend

Bullacris discolor emerges seasonally, and has been observed from September to February. The population size and trend are unknown, although the species is fairly abundant.

Threats

Potential threats to Bullacris discolor include climate change (less rainfall resulting in a loss of suitable habitat) and land use change as a result of urban development and agriculture.

Uses and trade

This species is not utilised.

Conservation

There are no conservation actions for Bullacris discolor, but it occurs in some protected areas. Research into its taxonomy, ecology, threats and population trends is needed. In particular, research is needed into its taxonomic relationship with B. serrata, to which it is morphologically very similar (Dirsh 1965, Gordon 2017).
