Least Concern (LC)

Rationale

The threat status of the Armoured Katydid is Least Concern because it has a relatively large extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, and its geographic range is not expected to be severely fragmented or to experience decline or extreme fluctuations presently or in the foreseeable future.

Distribution

The Armoured Katydid (Acanthoplus discoidalis) is fairly widespread throughout Botswana, Namibia, and Northern Cape Province, South Africa. Small populations are also found in the Western and Eastern Cape Provinces of South Africa.

Trend

No information on population sizes or trends is available.

Threats

The greatest threat to this species is habitat destruction, but due to its widespread distribution and sporadic pest status, Armoured Katydid populations should not be considered to be threatened.

Uses and trade

This species is not utilized.

Conservation

No specific conservation measures are in place for this species. During outbreak years, this species can reach sporadic pest proportions and has had a negative economic impact on small-holder cereal crops. Pest control measures were explored for this species in 2003, although none are in place on a regular basis.
