In South Africa, this species occurs primarily in the Kruger National Park and other protected areas in eastern Mpumulanga and northern Kwa-Zulu Natal provinces, and it does not appear to be facing any major threats currently.

Distribution

Endemic to southern Africa. Ranges from Mozambique southwards, entering southern Zimbabwe, South Africa and Eswatini (Swaziland). In South Africa, it is found in  the eastern parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and northeastern KwaZulu-Natal provinces (Broadley 1990, Bourquin 2004, Bates et al. 2014). The known distribution has only recently been discovered to extend into northeastern KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa (ReptileMap citizen science records available at www. http://vmus.adu.org.za; ReptileMap 9436; ReptileMap 153684).

Threats

The habitat of this species is likely to be threatened by changes in water regimes caused by anthropogenic extraction of water or changing climatic trends. Habitat loss resulting from industrial and agricultural development could also threaten this species.
