Has a restricted range but is fairly common and not threatened. In South Africa, it occurs in several protected areas such as Ndumo Game Reserve and iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

Distribution

A near-endemic to South Africa, occurring from Lake Sibaya in KwaZulu-Natal Province into Mozambique as far north as Inhambane (Broadley 1994, Bates et al. 2014). In South Africa the species has an extent of occurrence ca. 3,700 km². Records from St. Lucia Village and Cape Vidal are doubtful and have been omitted the current distribution, following Broadley (1994) and Bourquin (2004).
