Has an extensive distribution that ranges southwards from Kenya and Tanzania (Spawls et al. 2002) to Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambezi Region (Caprivi Strip) of Namibia, eastern Botswana (FitzSimons 1943, McLachlan 1981, Branch 1998) and South Africa. In South Africa it is restricted to the northern half of Limpopo (Jacobsen 1992, Bates et al. 2014), with an extent of occurrence of more than 26,000 km2. A molecular phylogeographic analysis would be helpful to determine whether this distribution is accurate or if it is composed of two or more cryptic species.
The population is considered to be stable.
