Red List of South African Species

Least Concern (LC)

Rationale (Changed due to Same category and criteria)

A widespread and common subspecies with no major threats, hence is assessed as Least Concern.

Distribution

Near endemic to southern Africa where it has an extensive range, with an extent of occurrence of more than 680,000 km2. Occurs in southern Angola, most of Namibia except the Namib Desert, most of Botswana (but is likely replaced in the east by Agama armata, although accurate distributional data is lacking) and the western half of South Africa (McLachlan 1981, Visser 1984). In South Africa, A. a. aculeata is widely distributed in the Northern Cape, western parts of the North-West Province, Free State and Eastern Cape provinces, and the eastern parts of the Western Cape. Records in the eastern parts of the Northern Cape Province needs to be investigated, as this species co-occurs with A. hispida. Furthermore records from the eastern part of the range needs to be verified whether they may represent A. a. distanti, especially if it turns out the later to be a valid species.
