Widespread and common and therefore considered Least Concern.

Distribution

Found across much of sub-Saharan Africa. Occurs in South Africa, Eswatini (Swaziland), Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and northwards to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Kenya (Broadley 1990, Branch 1998). In South Africa it is found in northern KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Gauteng, North-West Province, northeastern parts of Northern Cape provinces. Historical records (Broadley 1990) near the western border of the Free State Province are considered to be dubious (Bates et al. 2014).

There are no substantial threats to this subspecies.

There is no known utilization apart from some use in the pet trade.
