Has a restricted range in South Africa and Eswatini (Swaziland) but is common elsewhere and is not threatened. Occurs in three protected areas in South Africa:  iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Ndumo and Tembe Game Reserves and should be well protected in these areas (Bates et al. 2014).

Distribution

In South Africa, this species occurs from St. Lucia in northeastern KwaZulu-Natal Province northwards into Mozambique, eastern Zimbabwe and Tanzania to south eastern Kenya (Broadley 1990, Branch 1998, Spawls et al . 2002, Bates et al. 2014).

The species is widespread and common and therefore inferred to be stable.

Conservation

The taxonomic status, particularly in terms of subspecies (e.g. Dasypeltis medici lamuensis) needs to be investigated.
