Widespread and common, with no substantial threats. The species is therefore considered Least Concern.
Occurs across most of sub-Saharan Africa. There is an isolated relict population near Gobabis in Namibia (Branch 1998, Uetz 2012). In South Africa, the species has a disjunct distribution, with populations in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces potentially isolated from one another, as well as from the main population further north. Some records in the Northern Cape Province (Visser 1984) are slightly out of the species' range and therefore require confirmation before being considered as part of the range (Bates et al. 2014).
