Although this secretive snake has quite a localized distribution in South Africa and Swaziland, it is fairly widespread elsewhere. In Eswatini (Swaziland) it is considered Near Threatened (Monadjem et al. 2003) but in South Africa it is assessed as Least Concern.

Distribution

Endemic to eastern and southeastern Africa. In South Africa, its distribution extends from near Hluhluwe in northeastern KwaZulu-Natal, northwards into the eastern parts of Mpumalanga, just entering northeastern Limpopo (Branch 1998, Swanepoel 2010). It also occurs in Eswatini (Swaziland(, Mozambique and Zimbabwe northwards to Uganda and Kenya (Broadley 1990, Bates et al. 2014).
