Red List of South African Species

Alternatively, Explore species
Least Concern (LC)

Rationale (Changed due to Same category and criteria)

Widespread and common with no known substantial threats.

Distribution

Endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. Found in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, western Mozambique, Botswana, Angola, Namibia and South Africa (Broadley 1990, Branch 1998). Within South Africa it is found in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, North-West, adjacent northeastern Northern Cape and western Free State provinces. Two records on the map shown in Bates et al. (2014) are old (one dating to 1896) and out of range, and were considered questionable in that publication. However, a recent citizen science record from close to Olifantshoek, Northern Cape Province (Reptile Map record 157699, available at http://vmus.adu.org.za) suggests that these old records are likely valid.
