Widespread and abundant, occurring in numerous Protected Areas, and tolerant of transformed habitats . The species is therefore considered Least Concern.

Distribution

Found in southern Africa, across South Africa, Lesotho and Botswana, with isolated populations in eastern Zimbabwe and parts of Malawi; replaced in southern Malawi by Trachylepis mlanjensis (Broadley 2000). Within South Africa it is found in the northern half of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal (excluding eastern and coastal areas), Free State, North-West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo provinces and peripheral areas in the Northern Cape Province (Bates et al. 2014).
