Endemic to Limpopo and the eastern escarpment of Mpumalanga, South Africa, possibly extending into Mozambique (Jacobsen 1989, Branch 1998). The isolated western records for this species shown in Bates et al. (2014) are referable to Smaug breyeri (Stanley and Bates 2014).
The population is inferred to be stable given that its range is large and is not heavily impacted by habitat transformation.
This species is listed in CITES Appendix II. This species is in the pet trade and was recorded by CITES as being exported as recently as 2015 (UNEP-WCMC 2017).
