Endemic to southern Africa and limited to the northeastern and eastern parts of South Africa and adjacent Mozambique, probably extending into Eswatini [Swaziland] (Bates et al. 2014, Branch 1998; Broadley 1990). This species has a large extent of occurrence (243,299 km2) and occurs between of 250–1,600 m a.s.l. (Jacobsen 1989). There is an isolated subpopulation in northeastern KwaZulu-Natal (Bates et al. 2014).
There is no information on population size, although it is considered to be a common species and is therefore inferred to be stable.
No conservation actions are recommended. Its interpreted distribution falls within a number of protected areas.
