Red List of South African Species

Alternatively, Explore species
Least Concern (LC)

Rationale (Changed due to Same category and criteria)

Has a small range but found primarily within a protected area where it  fairly common. This species is therefore assessed as Least Concern.

Distribution

A southern African endemic that occurs along the KwaZulu-Natal coast in South Africa from Cape Vidal northwards to Ponta De Ouro in southern Mozambique (Bates et al. 2014, Broadley 1994). A record from St. Lucia Village is doubtful, and could not be confirmed after detail searches of the area (Bates et al. 2014).  Much of this species distribution is within the iSimangalso Wetland Park, which is a large protected area.

Population trend

Trend

The populations are inferred to be stable, as most of the range is within a protected area (iSimangaliso Wetland Park). There could be local declines outside iSimangaliso, as the area beyond the park borders is heavily transformed.

Threats

The area outside iSimangaliso is heavily impacted by urbanization, small scale agriculture and wood plantations. While most of the distribution is within iSimangaliso, the species is likely impacted outside this protected area.

Uses and trade

Not known to be utilized or traded in any way.

Conservation

The species' distribution outside iSimangaliso should be investigated, as well as whether the species can tolerate land transformation.
