Red List of South African Species

Data Deficient (DD)

Rationale (Changed due to New Information)

This is a rarely encountered species currently known from only records at two sites  (Jacobsen 1988, Bates et al. 2014). Based only on these two records, it appears to have  a restricted distribution (extent of occurrence of 766 km) but there is high uncertainty. Regardless, the general area where it occurs has relatively low habitat transformation. This species is regarded as Data Deficient.

Distribution

This species is only known from two localities in the northern reaches of the Limpopo Province, South Africa (Bates et al. 2014). It is possibly endemic to the Soutpansberg district.

Trend

No information on population status or trends is currently available.

Threats

There are no serious extrinsic threats, but livestock grazing take place in the area which might have an impact on this species. Fires may also be a threat to this species as it removes vegetation causing the top soil to dry out. However, these threats are not major.

Uses and trade

This taxon is not known to be utilized or traded in any way.

Conservation

To assess this species, it is necessary to collect information on its range and habitat preferences. The overall landscape has relatively little habitat transformation (Geo Terra Image 2015), but if this species is restricted, it would be useful to understand whether the relatively low impacts have any affect on it.
