A widespread and common species with no major threats and assessed as Least Concern.

Distribution

Endemic to southern Africa, occurring mainly in the eastern half of the South Africa and in extreme eastern Botswana (Otse) (Broadley and Wallach 2009, Broadley and Blaylock 2013, Bates et al. 2014). A relict subpopulation exists in eastern Zimbabwe (Nyange and Chimanimani Districts) (Broadley and Blaylock 2013), and another may be present in adjacent Mozambique (Broadley 1990). The South African Reptile Conservation Atlas data (Bates et al. 2014) also suggests that the species occurs in the southernmost parts of Mozambique, giving a total extent of occurrence of more than 736,000 km2.
