Least Concern (LC)

Rationale (Changed due to Same category and criteria)

Has a small extent of occurrence (ca 1,700 km2), but is locally abundant with relatively little habitat loss within its range. It also occurs within several protected areas. This species is assessed as Least Concern.

Distribution

Endemic to the granite outcrops of the southern Lowveld of northeast Mpumalanga Province, South Africa (Bates et al. 2014, Jacobsen et al. 2014). A specimen (TM 49920) from Farm Scrutton 23MT (as Afroedura transvaalica, see photograph in Pienaar 1978) may be referable to this species and could represent a translocation (Jacobsen et al. 2014).

Population trend

Trend

Reported as locally common (Jacobsen 1988). Given there are relatively little threats to its habitat, the population is inferred to be stable and not severely fragmented.

Threats

May be locally affected by grazing, burning and woodcutting in the future as these activities remove trees typical of the habitat (Jacobsen 1988).

Uses and trade

This species is not known to be utilized or traded.

Conservation

Occurs in some protected areas. No conservation actions are recommended.
