Red List of South African Species

Alternatively, Explore species
Least Concern (LC)

Rationale (Changed due to Same category and criteria)

Widespread and common with a large extent of occurrence (EOO) of over 227,000 km2 and no major threats. This species is therefore listed as Least Concern.

Distribution

This species has the largest range of all Bradypodion and is found across much of South Africa, in the Eastern Cape, southeastern Free State, eastern parts of the Western Cape (Uniondale and Beaufort West areas) and adjacent parts of the Northern Cape (Tolley and Burger 2007, Bates et al. 2014).  Several introduced subpopulations probably referable to this species occur in the Free State (Douglas 1992), Gauteng and Northern Cape, and would represent translocations (intentionally or possibly via the nursery plant trade).

Population trend

Trend

There is no quantitative information on population size or trends, however, given its widespread distribution, the species is estimated to be stable.

Threats

There are no significant threats to this species at present. However, species distribution modelling suggests 15-20% loss of suitable climate space by 2080 based on climate change scenarios (Houniet 2008).

Uses and trade

There have been no recorded exports since 1993 with minimal exports prior to that time  (UNEP-WCMC 2017).

Conservation

This species is listed in CITES Appendix II; it occurs in some protected areas. No conservation actions are recommended.
