Endemic to the South African provinces of KwaZulu-Natal (Bourquin 2004) and Free State (De Waal 1978, Bates 1996) where it is restricted to the Drakensberg and its outliers (Bates et al. 2014). It may also occur in Lesotho.
There is no information available on population size, but it is said to be locally abundant. The population is considered stable and not fragmented.
The taxonomic status of the cryptic species needs to be evaluated and updated. Subsequently, the species will need to be reassessed. The range coincides with a number of protected areas.
