This species has a wide distribution, with no known major widespread threats, it is therefore listed as Least Concern globally and in the different regions. In South Africa it is also assessed as Least Concern, it is known from a extent of occurrence of 260,923 km2 and area of occupancy of 156 km2, as it is widespread and common in its global distribution with no known threats.
Distribution
This species is widely distributed across much of the southern half of Africa, from the Congo and Tanzania to South Africa. Within central Africa, Johnston's Topminnow is known from the upper Kasai System to the upper Lualaba, Lufira and Luapula-Zambezi systems. It is also found in Lake Malawi and its catchment, including the upper and middle Shire River and Lake Chiuta (Wildekamp 1995). In southern Africa this species is found in the Cunene, Okavango and Zambezi systems, as well as the lower reaches of the Pungwe, Buzi and Limpopo rivers and found on the coastal plains of Kwazulu-Natal, but apparently absent from the main stream of the Lower Zambezi.
