Widespread across three large river systems in South Africa and Swaziland. It is known from an extent of occurrence of 40,102 km² and an area of occupancy of 460 km² and from more than 10 locations, within South Africa and Swaziland. It is experiencing threats however it is still abundant in suitable habitats, it is thus assessed as Least Concern.

Distribution

Distributed from the Phongolo River in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, through Swaziland north to the Sabie River in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Unusual northern distribution absent from the Crocodile and Nkomati Rivers, present in the Mlumati and Malalotja Rivers. Interspersed with C. pretoriae but does not occur sympatrically with that species.

Species is widespread in suitable habitat.

Threats

There is sedimentation of upper catchments from forestry and agriculture. In South Africa flow modification has impacted this species.

Conservation

Conservation of upper catchments and control of forestry operations should be implemented where possible. Consideration of dam releases for perennial flows.
