An endemic from the Northern Cape Province, South Africa (EOO 4 421 km<sup>2</sup>). Although widespread, the taxon is rare and localized as a result of its specific habitat requirements and it occurs in scattered colonies, generally in low numbers. It faces no significant threats at present. The taxon thus qualifies globally under the IUCN criteria as Least Concern and is nationally classified as Rare (Habitat Specialist).

Distribution

Endemic to the Northern Cape Province in South Africa, found from Nuwerus at the north-east extent of its range to Kompromise in the south-east.

Four subpopulations have been identified for this taxon, near the towns Nuwerus, Nieuwoudville, Calvinia (south) and Kompromise. These four subpopulations are at least 50 km from each other and have no apparent genetic links. The largest location (Nieuwoudville) is centred on the Hantam National Botanical Garden and accommodates several colonies.

Threats

This taxon lost habitat on the Bokkeveld escarpment to wheat cultivation in the past but transformation of this habitat is no longer transformation of this habitat taking place. There are no immediate threats to this taxon. The subpopulation from which the species was originally described is protected in the Hantam National Botanical Garden.
