Red List of South African Species

Rare

Rationale (Changed due to Same category and criteria)

This endemic taxon has a restricted range in the Western Cape, South Africa (EOO 5 km2). It is not threatened as it occurs in a reasonably well-managed nature reserve, and it seems inconceivable that an unseasonal fire could destroy all four subpopulations, and all the host plants. The taxon thus currently qualifies globally under the IUCN criteria as Least Concern and is nationally classified as Rare (Restricted Range and Habitat Specialist).

Distribution

Endemic to the Western Cape Province in South Africa, only occurring on the south-astern portion of the Kammanassie mountains near Uniondale.

Threats

The only threat would be that posed by fire during or just before the flight period. It is highly unlikely that such a fire would: 1. Burn the entire mountain. 2. Kill all the adults flying, and any larvae on the host plant, and any eggs lying on the ground. 3. Destroy all the host plants so that any larvae emerging from eggs dropped by the later emerging adults had no host plants to consume.

Conservation

The Kammanassie mountain range, to which this taxon is restricted, falls under the protection of CapeNature. The only conservation actions recommended are to practice block burning, so that there is no possibility that the entire mountain could be burnt in a single fire.
