Previously classified as Restricted (Branch 1988), but now known to be widespread with only minor habitat transformation within its range. There are no known substantial threats. Therefore, this species is considered Least Concern.

Distribution

Endemic to southern Africa. Occurs from southern Namibia into the arid regions of western South Africa (Branch 1998). The subspecies Naja nigricincta woodi  occurs in South Africa in the Northern Cape and western half of the Western Cape provinces, as  as far east as Prieska and as far south as Paarl (Bates et al. 2014).
