Red List of South African Species

Alternatively, Explore species
Least Concern (LC)

Rationale (Changed due to Same category and criteria)

Although this species does not have a large distribution, its entire range is essentially intact with a lack of current or projected threats relating to habitat loss. Approximately 15% of its distribution falls within protected areas, and habitat transformation within the remainder of the distribution has been minimal. The species is therefore listed as Least Concern.

Distribution

Endemic to the Richtersveld of the Northern Cape, South Africa, possibly ranging into Namibia (Bauer and Branch 2003, Bates et al. 2014).

Trend

No information on population sizes or trends is currently available, but is inferred to be stable given there is minimal habitat transformation in its range and it is well protected.

Threats

There are no major threats to this species.

Uses and trade

This species is listed in CITES Appendix II, but wild caught individuals have never been exported from South Africa for pet trade  (UNEP-WCMC 2017). In the 1990s, 100 animals were reported as exported for trade from Tanzania, but this species does not occur there. These likely represent an export of a cordylid species from Tanzania exported under the name Namazonurus lawrenci.

Conservation

This species is listed in CITES Appendix II; it occurs in one protected area. Field surveys to better estimate the distribution extent would be useful, particularly to understand its distribution in Namibia.
