Red List of South African Species

Alternatively, Explore species
Least Concern (LC)

Rationale (Changed due to Knowledge of criteria)

This species has a small range (extent of occurrence (EOO) ca 1,420 km2) with confirmed records at  Percy Fyfe and Witvinger nature reserves, Limpopo Province, South Africa. Although the overall landscape is heavily impacted in this area of Limpopo, most of this species range has very  little habitat loss (most likely less than 10% of the range). National Landcover data shows that EOO most probably has not decreased from its original extent. This species is therefore considered Least Concern.

Distribution

Found in the granitic hills at Percy Fyfe Nature Reserve (Jacobsen 1992) and the nearby Witvinger Nature Reserve, in Limpopo Province, South Africa (Bates et al. 2014). Other granitic hills adjacent to these two reserves are included as part of the distribution.

Decline

Slight

Population trend

Trend

The species is considered stable at present, given that there is only a minor amount of habitat loss within its range, and that it is unlikely to be affected by the minor loss of habitat quality in its range.

Threats

Although part of the population falls in protected areas, this area is small and adjacent regions are heavily affected by agriculture and urbanization. While not a tangible threat at present, these threats could eventually become active in the area.

Uses and trade

Not known to be utilized in any way.

Conservation

There are few records of this species. It would be helpful to improve the distribution data to provide higher confidence regarding its distribution, through detailed surveys of the population and of suitable habitat in areas adjacent to Percy Fyfe and Witvinger nature reserves.
