Although there are at least a few isolated subpopulations, this species is fairly widespread and locally abundant in a mountainous area where it is not generally threatened by anthropogenic activities. Hence it is assessed as Least Concern.

Distribution

Endemic to the South African provinces of KwaZulu-Natal (Bourquin 2004) and Free State (De Waal 1978, Bates 1996) where it is restricted to the Drakensberg and its outliers (Bates et al. 2014). It may also occur in Lesotho.

There is no information available on population size, but it is said to be locally abundant. The  population is considered stable and not fragmented.

There are no major threats to this species.

Not known to be utilized in any way.

Conservation

The taxonomic status of the cryptic species needs to be evaluated and updated. Subsequently, the species will need to be reassessed. The range coincides with a number of protected areas.
