Red List of South African Species

Alternatively, Explore species
Least Concern (LC)

Rationale (Changed due to Same category and criteria)

This species is widespread and fairly common and has no major threats, hence it is assessed as Least Concern.

Distribution

Endemic to South Africa and adjacent southwestern Namibia (McLachlan 1981, Bates et al. 2014). In South Africa, it has a large distribution, occurring mainly along the West Coast in the winter rainfall areas of the Northern and Western Cape Provinces. Although originally distributed as far south as Cape Town (McLachlan 1981), contemporary populations throughout the heavily modified Cape Flats are scant and sightings are now rare. Several records from the Nama-Karoo, including the De Aar - Hanover and Beaufort West areas, may refer to Agama aculeata aculeata, and are excluded from the map. Two isolated subpopulations in grassland habitat in the northwestern Free State (referred to as A. makarikarica by DeWaal 1978), may represent a cryptic taxon.

Population trend

Trend

The population is stable. An estimate of the number of existing subpopulations is not possible.

Threats

It is unlikely that any major threat is impacting this species.

Uses and trade

No utilization or trade reported for this species

Conservation

If the Free State populations are referable to a new taxon, then a separate assessment will be needed.
