Least Concern (LC)

Rationale (Changed due to Same category and criteria)

This species is widespread and common in its preferred habitat within South Africa and is regionally assessed at the national level as Least Concern.

Distribution

In South Africa, this species occurs in the eastward-draining rivers from the Limpopo to the Phongolo River Systems. The global distribution of this species extends into several southern African river systems from the Zambian, Congo and the Cunene, Okavango and upper and middle Zambezi south to the Phongolo (Skelton 2001). The species is absent from the Lower Zambezi, but is present in the Pungwe and Buzi Rivers.

Population trend

Trend

Common and widespread and thus the populations are not threatened.

Threats

The species may be impacted by the presence of invasive alien species and pollution causing habitat degradation in Gauteng. Invasive alien species could be responsible for the extirpation of the species in the Uvongo River System, Kwazulu-Natal. Despite threats to some populations it is still abundant across the majority of its geographical range.

Conservation

The species exists in numerous protected areas within southern Africa although no specific protection measures targeted at fishes are in place.
